The premise of this TV show is that it is impossible to use anything with electronics, even if you have a battery for them. So this include cars... But then I got thinking, this doesn't include all cars! What about diesels with mechanical fuel pumps? If you devised some sort of manner in which to turn the engine over, like perhaps by rolling it down a hill, wouldn't the engine run? With ZERO electricity required.

Kinja'd!!!

The TV show has people relying on steam power, but one would think older diesel trucks with Ford IDI and older Cummins or Chevy diesel engines would be able to run too?

I watched the first few seasons. I think the premise was actually the things in the air that caused the shutdown actually robbed anything of it's energy value, even fuel or gunpowder. Otherwise I would be rollin deep with a W123, right over motherfuckers

No, guns actually work in the show, people use a whole variety of guns from revolvers to .50 cal machine guns. I see no reason, within the limits this show has set, why a diesel shouldn't run, if you manage to get it started.

oh yeah now I remember that. been a while. I have started diesels this way before. A tiny shot of ether and roll it down a hill or heat the block up and roll.

seemed like a pretty flimsy premise, but yeah. it would be hard at all to get a mechanical diesel rolling. Maybe use one of these?

Kinja'd!!!

Its a mechanical spring wound starter for diesels.

WWII style Coffman starter.

Not sure about a diesel, but I can totally get my car going without a battery, as I did just a few days ago. Sure, it needed the battery to keep going, but it's not impossible if you:

shift into second

press the clutch all the way in

get the car moving by push or gravity force

suddenly dump the clutch

What about an older gas motor with a crank start and a magneto?

Yeah, but 15 year old diesel..... Plus no way to get more, as wells, refineries and the like need power.

I think that's why they went with external combustion. Dig it out of the ground or chop it down, and light it on fire over a boiler.

Also, how many people watching really understand the difference between diesel and gas, mechanical versus electronic injection, and on and on. They don't want people to think too hard

Oh, come on, have more fun with it.

Start it with a shotgun shell!

That's probably why they went that route, but it would just be so cool if every were driving around in full size trucks and/or older Mercedes's.

The thing is, a spark cannot be made, ZERO electricity in any way shape or form, so a spark plug wouldn't work.

Hmmm, do magneto's generate a spark though? Because I think that would be a no-no.

Perhaps old diesel is nice an clean? Since it'll have had a chance to settle, haha.

I'm sure they could figure out ways to make biodiesel and or run off of grease. Shit I know IDI Ford diesels will even run on engine oil, transmission fluid or hydraulic fluid, lol.

Yep, that's what would really keep it from going functional, but if the same method could be applied to diesel... Well, I think it would end up working.

Yep, you just wouldn't have lights of any kind or and signals over anything with a wire really. Need vacuum powered gauges. But who gives is a shit, the place is lawless as fuck, there's no speed limits.
